Biblical Answer

As I reflect on the purpose of life, I'm reminded of the words of Scripture that suggest our lives should be about glorifying God and becoming more like Christ. According to Scripture, the major purpose of our life should be to know God and make Him known to others, to love Him with all our heart, mind, and soul, and to love our neighbors as ourselves. This is the foundation upon which we can find meaning and significance in our lives.

But what about the pain that seems to fill our lives? I've walked with people who struggle with depression and suffering, and I've seen how it can feel like it's all for nothing. But the Bible teaches us that our sufferings are not meaningless, but rather, they can be used by God to shape us into the image of Christ. Our sufferings can be a catalyst for growth, for learning, and for becoming more like Jesus. As the Psalmist says, "It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees" (Psalm 119:71).

In the midst of pain, it's easy to lose sight of our purpose. But when we fix our eyes on God and His promises, we can find hope and meaning even in the midst of suffering. Our lives are not just about avoiding pain, but about becoming more like Christ, even in the midst of pain. As I pastor our church, I've seen how God can take our sufferings and use them to bring glory to Himself, to bring comfort to others, and to transform us into the image of Christ. This is the purpose of life, and it's a purpose that's not just about us, but about God's glory.
