Can I still have a sense of purpose after losing my identity?
Understanding Identity and Purpose
As a Christian, we must understand that our identity is not solely based on our personal experiences, roles, or activities, but rather on our relationship with God through Jesus Christ. Our identity is rooted in who we are in Christ, and this is what gives us a sense of purpose and direction in life. As the Bible says in 2 Corinthians 5:17, "If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!" This means that our old identity, shaped by our sinful nature, has passed away, and we have been reborn as a brand-new creation in Christ.
Finding Purpose Beyond Identity
While our identity in Christ is the foundation of our purpose, it's possible that we may need to update our life plan and aspirations as we grow in our faith. This doesn't mean that our purpose has changed, but rather that we may need to find new ways to achieve it. As the Bible says in Philippians 3:13-14, "Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself to have attained this. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus." This means that we must be willing to let go of our old aspirations and focus on the new life that God has given us in Christ.
Living Out Our Purpose
As we seek to live out our purpose, we must remember that our identity in Christ is not just about what we believe, but about who we are in relationship with God. This means that we must focus on glorifying God and living out our faith in practical ways. As the Bible says in 2 Corinthians 5:9, "So we make it our goal to please him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it." This means that we must be willing to surrender our old identity and live out our new life in Christ, no matter what challenges or opportunities come our way. As we do, we will be changed by the power of the Spirit, and our purpose will become more and more clear. We will be able to say, as Paul did, "Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 3:13-14) This is the key to finding our purpose and living a life that is pleasing to God.
