Can we find joy in the simple things in life when we're feeling stuck?
The Bible teaches that joy is a fundamental aspect of a life organized around God. However, finding joy in the simple things in life can be challenging, especially when we're feeling stuck. One reason for this is that we often confuse pleasure with joy. While pleasure can provide temporary happiness, it is fleeting and can even lead to sadness. Joy, on the other hand, is a deeper and more sustainable experience that comes from a personal relationship with God. As the Bible says, "You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand" (Psalm 16:11).
To experience joy in the simple things in life, we need to be willing to look for it and welcome it into our lives. This requires a mindset shift, as we often try to find happiness through external means such as pleasure, wealth, or status. However, true happiness comes from within, and it is rooted in our relationship with God. As the Bible says, "Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart" (Psalm 37:4). When we focus on our relationship with God and prioritize His presence in our lives, we can experience joy in even the most mundane tasks. For example, eating, drinking, and working can become joyful experiences when we do them with gratitude and thanksgiving.
In addition to prioritizing our relationship with God, we can also cultivate joy in our lives by practicing habits that promote joy. These habits can include activities such as feasting, gratitude, celebration, worship, solitude, fasting, and serving. As Richard Foster said, "Joy is the keynote of all the Disciplines." When we practice these habits over time, they can become joyful experiences that bring us closer to God and increase our sense of joy. Ultimately, finding joy in the simple things in life requires a willingness to look for it, prioritize our relationship with God, and cultivate habits that promote joy. By doing so, we can experience the joy that God has promised to us, even in the midst of challenges and difficulties.
