The Bible's Teaching on Forgiveness

The Bible teaches that forgiveness is a fundamental aspect of the Christian faith. It is a prerogative of God alone, but God calls His followers to forgive others as He has forgiven them (Ephesians 4:32). Forgiveness does not mean forgetting, but rather not holding a person's sin against them. Jesus instructs His disciples to forgive "seventy times seven" (Matthew 18:21-22), illustrating the importance of forgiving others extravagantly.

The Bible also teaches that forgiveness is not dependent on the actions of the offender, but rather on the willingness of the offended to forgive. This is seen in the parable of the unforgiving debtor (Matthew 18:23-35), where Jesus teaches that those who refuse to forgive others will not be forgiven by God. Furthermore, the Bible teaches that forgiveness requires repentance, as seen in the story of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32). The father's forgiveness of his son is conditional on the son's repentance and return to him.

The Bible emphasizes the importance of forgiving others as a way of emulating God's character and demonstrating His love and grace. Jesus teaches that if we do not forgive others, God will not forgive us (Matthew 6:14-15). Therefore, forgiveness is not just a moral obligation, but also a spiritual necessity for those who seek to follow Jesus.
