Your Question:

Is God just a myth to make us feel better?

Answer:

As a pastor and a person of faith, I've grappled with the question of whether God's existence can be reconciled with the suffering in the world. It's true that the extent and depth of suffering can be overwhelming, and it's natural to wonder if God is absent or indifferent. However, I believe that suffering can be seen as an opportunity for God to work in our lives, to refine us and bring us closer to Himself.

I don't think God causes suffering, but rather He is gracious and loving enough to make it count for our good. This doesn't mean that we have to understand the reasons behind every tragedy or hardship, but rather that we can trust in God's sovereignty and goodness. As the Bible says, "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose" (Romans 8:28).

For me, the question of God's existence is not just about intellectual assent, but about personal experience and relationship. I've seen God work in the lives of my family and congregation, bringing healing and hope in the midst of suffering. My wife Susan and I have been married for 19 years, and we've experienced our share of challenges, but we've also seen God's faithfulness and love in the midst of those struggles.
