Understanding Chaos and God's Sovereignty

When chaos reigns, it can be challenging to trust in God's sovereignty. The Bible teaches that God's governance includes chaos, but this chaos is bounded by God's goodness. God has no obligation to explain this chaotic energy to mere mortals. In fact, mortals can rule best when God is not only sovereign but also the sovereign. This is evident in the book of Revelation, where John hears the living creatures giving the command for chaos to be unleashed, rather than God directly. This suggests that God is not at the mercy of chaos, but rather, chaos is contained within God's dominion.

Shelter from the Storm

The Bible offers a different perspective on finding shelter from the storm of calamity. Rather than turning to human promises of peace and prosperity, we are to turn to the living God who is the Creator of the universe. This is evident in Psalm 89, where the psalmist turns to God as his shelter from the overwhelming waters of chaos. God is the only one in whom we should place our trust, and safety comes only from having the almighty God on our side. This is also seen in Psalm 89, where God is described as the one who controls and defeats those spiritual powers that challenge him, including the forces of chaos.

Trust in God

So, how can we trust in God's sovereignty when chaos reigns? The answer lies in recognizing that God is the only one who can truly provide shelter from the storm. We need to trust in God's goodness and sovereignty, even when we don't understand the chaotic circumstances around us. This trust is not based on our own understanding or reason, but rather on God's character and promises. As the Bible says, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight" (Proverbs 3:5-6). By trusting in God, we can find peace and security, even in the midst of chaos. This is not to say that we will never experience chaos again, but rather that we will know that God is always with us and that He is working all things for our good (Romans 8:28).
