Why did I have to suffer so much for so long?
The Mystery of Suffering
The question of suffering is a profound and complex one that has puzzled people for centuries. The Bible itself acknowledges the mystery of suffering, and Jesus, the Son of God, asked God why he had to suffer so much for so long. In fact, Jesus' cry of despair on the cross, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" is a powerful expression of the human experience of suffering.
The Limited Understanding of Human Wisdom
Human wisdom often tries to explain suffering, but even with the best explanations, there are times when suffering seems entirely inexplicable. The Bible teaches that God is sovereign over all creation, and that he governs even the most painful and inexplicable circumstances. This means that God is not caught off guard by our suffering, and that he is working even in the midst of our pain to bring about his good purposes.
Trusting God in the Midst of Suffering
So how do we respond to suffering that seems inexplicable? The Bible teaches that trust is the answer to the problem of suffering. When we trust God, even in the midst of pain, we are able to find peace and comfort. Jesus' own words to his disciples, "God, I don't know what you are doing, but you do, and that is enough," model this kind of trust. By trusting God, we can find the strength to endure our suffering, even when we don't understand it. Ultimately, our suffering is not in vain, but is a means by which God is working to bring about his good purposes in our lives. (2 Corinthians 12:9-10, Romans 8:28) As the Bible says, "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." (Romans 8:28) By trusting God, we can find peace and comfort in the midst of suffering.
