Trust in God: Understanding the Paradox

Trust in God is a paradoxical concept. On one hand, we are encouraged to trust God, as seen in Matthew 9:29, which says "According to your faith, let it be to you." This verse implies that we have a certain amount of control over our faith and that God responds to our trust. However, this can lead to a misunderstanding that we have control over God's actions. The Bible teaches that God is sovereign and that His plans cannot be thwarted (Isaiah 50:10-11). This means that our trust in God is not about trying to control Him, but rather about recognizing His sovereignty and trusting Him to work out His plan in our lives.

The Nature of Trust in God

Trust in God is not about having a guarantee of a specific outcome, but rather about trusting in His character and promises. The Bible teaches that God is good and that His gifts are intended to bless us (Psalm 31:19, Isaiah 41:10). When we trust in God, we are not trusting in our own abilities or circumstances, but rather in His power and love. This trust is not just a feeling, but a strong and vigorous confidence built on the fact that God is holy love (Job 13:15). As we respond to God in obedience, we can develop a knack for trusting Him consistently, which is called perseverance (1 Corinthians 10:13).

The Importance of Perseverance

Perseverance is key to developing a consistent trust in God. As we practice trusting Him, we can become proficient in our ability to trust Him, even in difficult circumstances. This is not about trying to control God's actions, but rather about recognizing His sovereignty and trusting Him to work out His plan in our lives. When we trust in God, we are not trusting in our own thinking or abilities, but rather in His character and promises. As Brother Lawrence wrote, we build our faith by "the practice of the presence of God" (Colossians 2:11-14). When we are constantly talking to Christ and recognizing His presence in our lives, it becomes easier to trust Him, even when we don't understand what's happening. (Psalm 31:19, Isaiah 41:10).
