How do we choose between safety and freedom when life gets busy?
We often find ourselves at a crossroads, deciding between safety and freedom. This dilemma arises when we must choose between a life of comfort and a life of purpose. The modern world often emphasizes the importance of safety, leading us to believe that freedom is a hindrance to security. However, this perspective neglects the value of true freedom, which is found in subjection to God and His truth.
A Rule of Life is an invitation to a different definition of freedom. It is a set of commitments that guide our choices and actions, helping us to choose the path that leads to life. This Rule is not a set of restrictions, but rather a set of boundaries that protect us from the dangers of the world. By following a Rule of Life, we are able to choose the one particular thing that is commanded by God and refuse the contrary, as Scripture defines freedom (Deuteronomy 30:19).
Our choices are limited by circumstances, but they are also influenced by our foundational desires and wants. However, our desires and wants are ultimately determined by God's decision and activity. God is in control of all the circumstances that bear on our situation, and He is the one who gives us the power to choose among options in light of who we are. This understanding of freedom is not coercion, but rather persuasion, and it is found in subjection to God and His truth. By acknowledging God's sovereignty over our lives, we are able to choose the path that leads to life, rather than simply seeking safety and security.
