Is It Wrong to Be Scared of the Future?

When it comes to being scared of the future, the Bible has a lot to say. On one hand, it is understandable to have some level of fear or anxiety about what lies ahead. After all, the future can be uncertain and unpredictable, and it's natural to feel some level of apprehension about what might happen. However, the Bible also warns against letting fear and anxiety control our lives. In Matthew 6:34, Jesus teaches us not to worry about our lives or our provision, saying, "Do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?" This verse is not saying that we should be reckless or irresponsible, but rather that we should trust in God's provision and care for us.

The Root of Fear: Unbelief

So, what is the root of fear when it comes to the future? The Bible teaches that fear is often a result of unbelief. When we worry about the future, we are essentially saying that we don't trust God to take care of us. We are assuming that we need to control the outcome of our lives, rather than trusting in God's sovereignty and goodness. This is a form of unbelief, and it can lead to all sorts of negative consequences. In 1 John 4:18, we read, "There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love." When we trust in God's love and provision, we are able to overcome our fear and anxiety about the future.

Trust in God's Goodness

So, how can we overcome our fear of the future? The answer is simple: we need to trust in God's goodness and sovereignty. When we recognize that God is in control and that He loves us, we are able to let go of our fear and anxiety. We can begin to see the future as a time of opportunity and promise, rather than as a source of fear and uncertainty. As the Bible says in Romans 8:28, "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." When we trust in God's goodness and sovereignty, we are able to face the future with confidence and hope, rather than fear and anxiety.
