The Crisis of Losing Everything

The loss of a business, identity, and savings can be a devastating experience, leaving one feeling hopeless and without direction. However, as a Christian, it's essential to reframe this crisis in light of God's sovereignty and purpose. In my own journey, I faced a similar crisis when Liberty University, the institution I had poured my heart and soul into, faced financial difficulties. I had to come to terms with the possibility of losing everything I had worked for, including my identity as a pastor and educator.

The Importance of Humility and Accountability

In the midst of crisis, it's crucial to acknowledge our own mistakes and weaknesses. I made some terrible financial decisions early in my ministry that put the university at risk. However, God's sovereignty and grace were evident as the university emerged stronger despite the challenges. Similarly, when we face financial setbacks, it's essential to take responsibility for our actions and seek accountability. This means being transparent about our financial decisions and seeking guidance from trusted advisors. By doing so, we can learn from our mistakes and grow in our financial management skills.

Finding Identity in Christ

In times of crisis, it's easy to lose our sense of identity and purpose. However, as Christians, our identity is not rooted in our accomplishments or possessions but in our relationship with Christ. When we lose everything, we may feel like we've lost ourselves, but in reality, we're being given the opportunity to rediscover our true identity in Him. By fixing our eyes on Jesus and His love for us, we can find peace and purpose even in the midst of uncertainty. As the apostle Paul wrote, "I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I am convinced that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus" (Philippians 1:6, NIV). By trusting in God's sovereignty and goodness, we can find hope and restoration even in the midst of crisis.
