The Purpose of Suffering

Suffering is a universal human experience that often puzzles us. We struggle to understand why a loving God would allow us to suffer. However, we must consider that God's ways are not our ways, and His purposes may be beyond our comprehension (Isaiah 55:8-9). Suffering can be a means to an end, a way for us to draw closer to God and develop our character. As C.S. Lewis said, "God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world" (The Problem of Pain). Through our struggles and pain, we are being offered perseverance, the character of God (Romans 5:3-5).

The Sovereignty of God

God's sovereignty is not limited by our understanding of why He allows suffering. His reasons may be hidden from us, but that does not mean He does not have good reasons. As the Bible says, "My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts" (Isaiah 55:8-9). God's suffering is not a suffering imposed from outside, caused by weakness, but the suffering of love, an active suffering (John 10:10). He does not ask us to believe because He is on a divine ego trip, but because He has a plan to redeem us and bring us closer to Himself.

The Purpose of Our Existence

The goal of our existence is relationship with God, finding Him in our suffering is the point. Suffering and sin are closely tied, and God allows suffering to be a means to an end, a way for us to walk in the footsteps of Jesus and His sufferings (1 Peter 2:21). As we go through our struggles and pain, we are being offered perseverance, the character of God. Hardships are intended to give us a spiritual makeover, to help us develop our character and become more like Christ. God's love for us is the reason He allows us to suffer, not because we deserve it, but because He loves us enough to act on our behalf (Romans 5:8). He wants us to know Him, to trust Him, and to find our strength in Him, even in the midst of suffering.
