The Paradox of Independence and Suffering

The question of whether one can still be independent if paralyzed raises interesting philosophical and theological considerations. In the context of suffering, the concept of independence is complicated. On one hand, independence implies the ability to make choices and decisions without external influence. On the other hand, suffering can be seen as a limitation on one's independence, as it may require reliance on others for care and support.

The Biblical Perspective

From a biblical perspective, independence is not necessarily the same as self-sufficiency. In fact, the Bible teaches that true freedom and independence come from a relationship with God (Galatians 5:1, 13-14). The apostle Paul writes, "For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another." (Galatians 5:13). This means that even in suffering, one can still be independent in the sense that they are not controlled by their circumstances, but rather by their faith in God.

While one may be physically dependent on others for care and support, they can still be spiritually independent in their relationship with God. Therefore, even if one is paralyzed, they can still be independent in the sense that they are not controlled by their circumstances, but rather by their faith in God. Ultimately, true independence is not about physical ability, but about spiritual dependence on God. As the apostle Paul writes, "For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain." (Philippians 1:21). In this sense, one can still be independent even in the midst of suffering.
