The Priority of Love

Love is paramount in the Christian life, and we must prioritize it above all else. This is evident in the biblical command to "love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind" (Matt. 22:37), and to "love your neighbor as yourself" (Mark 12:31). When the world is against us, we must not let our circumstances dictate our love. Instead, we must prioritize our love for God and others, even when it is difficult.

To prioritize love, we must understand the nature of love. The biblical definition of love is not mere tolerance or a warm feeling, but a commitment to the well-being and flourishing of others. This commitment is marked equally by love and truth, and we must avoid extremism that pursues either at the expense of the other. Our love must be strengthened by truth, and our truth must be softened by love. We must also recognize that our love for others is not a blind or uncritical love, but a love that is informed by the truth of God's Word.

In the face of opposition, we must choose to love our enemies, pray for those who persecute us, and show kindness to those who are unkind to us (Matt. 5:44; Luke 6:27-36). This is not a natural response, but a supernatural one that is empowered by the Holy Spirit. We must be willing to surrender our own desires and interests for the sake of others, and to prioritize their needs above our own. This is the essence of loving our neighbors as ourselves, and it is a command that we must take seriously in our daily lives. By prioritizing love, we will be able to overcome even the most difficult obstacles and to live a life that is pleasing to God.
