The Process of Forgiveness

Forgiveness is a difficult and unnatural act that requires practice to perfect it. It is not a one-time event, but rather a process that involves relinquishing bitterness and resentment multiple times. As Jim puts it, "Forgiveness is an act of self-defense, a tourniquet that stops the fatal bleeding of resentment." This process is not easy, and it requires humility to ask for forgiveness and to forgive others. In fact, forgiveness is so difficult that it's often hard to forgive someone even after we've decided to do so.

The Importance of Forgiveness

Forgiveness is not just a matter of forgiving others, but also of being forgiven by God. If we do not forgive others, it can interrupt our relationship with God. As the Bible says, "Until sin is forgiven and the relationship is restored, prayer will, of course, be difficult" (Isa. 59:1-2).
