What's the right decision when I'm torn between my faith and my fear of death?
Overcoming Fear with Faith
When faced with the fear of death, it's essential to recognize that it's a natural response, but it shouldn't control our lives. As the Bible says, "Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God" (Romans 10:17). This means that our faith in God is strengthened by hearing and studying His Word. When we're afraid, we should confess our fears as unbelief and pray specifically about them, asking God to enlighten us and give us strength to overcome them.
One of the primary reasons God allows trials in our lives, including the fear of death, is to help us grow in our faith and trust in Him (2 Corinthians 1:8-9). This process of testing our faith produces patience, which enables us to persevere and have confidence in God's sovereignty. When we're afraid, we should take a deep spiritual breath, remembering God's assurance to us, and trust in His goodness and power. As the Psalmist says, "When I am afraid, I will trust in you" (Psalm 56:3).
To overcome fear with faith, we must take action. We should decide what the first step is to take, count the cost, and pray for guidance. We should also seek the help of strong believers to pray with us and support us in our journey of faith. As Jesus said, "Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell" (Matthew 10:28). By focusing on our spiritual well-being and trusting in God's sovereignty, we can overcome our fear of death and live a life of faith and confidence in Him.
