Biblical Answer

The concept of being a good neighbor in a world of division is rooted in the teachings of Jesus in the Bible. According to Luke 10:25-37, Jesus commended the answer of a lawyer who asked what he must do to inherit eternal life. The lawyer replied, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself" (Luke 10:27). Jesus emphasized the importance of loving one's neighbor, not just friends or family, but anyone with whom we come into contact. This means treating others with kindness, compassion, and justice, regardless of their background or circumstances.

In the book of Deuteronomy, God commands the Israelites to love resident aliens, who are often marginalized and oppressed (Deut. 10:18-19). This command is not limited to loving those who are like us, but also those who are different from us. In fact, Jesus teaches that we should love our neighbors as ourselves, which means treating them with the same kindness, compassion, and justice that we would want for ourselves (Luke 10:27). This is not just a moral obligation, but also a reflection of God's love for humanity. As the Bible says, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself, for I am the Lord your God, who loves resident aliens" (Deut. 10:19).

In a world of division, being a good neighbor requires humility, compassion, and a willingness to put the needs of others before our own. It means being willing to listen to and understand those who may hold different views or come from different backgrounds. It means being willing to make restitution and satisfaction for wrongs done to others, and to behave justly towards our neighbors. As Jesus teaches, "Do this, and you will live" (Luke 10:28). By loving our neighbors as ourselves, we not only bring joy and fulfillment to others, but also to ourselves. We reflect the character of God, who is a God of love, compassion, and justice. By being good neighbors in a world of division, we can help to build bridges of understanding and unity, and bring glory to God.
