The Feeling of Abandonment: A Biblical Perspective

The feeling of being abandoned by God can be a crushing experience, leaving one feeling isolated, alone, and disconnected from their Creator. However, this feeling can often be a result of our own resistance to surrendering to God's sovereignty. When we struggle with feelings of abandonment, it may be because we have not fully surrendered ourselves to God's plan and purposes. The Bible teaches us to "recklessly abandon ourselves" to God, surrendering everything to Him (Psalm 37:5). When we do this, we will no longer think about what God is going to do, but instead, we will trust in His goodness and faithfulness.

The feeling of abandonment can also be a result of our own sinful nature. When we grumble, show discontent, and resentment towards God's circumstances, it reveals a lack of trust in His goodness and sovereignty. The Bible teaches us that God is a good Father who leads us in and out of difficult situations (Psalm 23:4). We may feel that God has abandoned us, but the truth is that He is seeking us more than we are seeking Him. As the Bible says, "When I was looking for God, He found me" (Matthew 6:33). When we look beyond the roadblocks in the road to God, we will see that He has not abandoned us, but is instead, seeking to draw us closer to Himself.

The feeling of abandonment can also be a result of our own unbelief and pessimism. When we resign ourselves to the thought that God has left us high and dry, it deeply dishonours our great God and reveals a lack of trust in His goodness and faithfulness. The Bible teaches us to seek God with our whole heart, to trust in Him at all times, and to abandon ourselves to His sovereignty. When we do this, we will find that God gives our life to us as a prize, and we will experience a life of faith, not a life of emotional enjoyment of His blessings. The feeling of abandonment is not a reflection of God's character, but rather a reflection of our own resistance to surrendering to His sovereignty.
