Can I Still Trust God When He Seems So Silent?

When we feel that God is silent, it can be challenging to trust Him. The Bible, however, offers a different perspective. In Psalm 4, it is written that those who put their trust in God will find that they are grounded in His presence, even when they cannot hear Him (Psalm 4:4-7). This silence is not a sign of God's displeasure, but rather a time of discipline, where He is trusting us to withstand the silence. We can choose to pretend that everything is okay, or we can wait upon God and trust in His goodness.

The Nature of Faith

Faith is not just a weak emotion, but a strong and vigorous confidence built on the fact that God is holy love. When we cannot see or hear God, we can still trust in His presence. The Bible says, "I will trust in Him, yet will I not fear" (Job 13:15). This trust is not based on our emotions, but on our understanding of God's character. When we pray, we are not just seeking an audible response, but we are seeking a deeper relationship with God. The Bible says, "He is there, and He is not silent. There is no use having a silent God. We would not know anything about Him" (Psalm 19:1-6). This means that even when we cannot hear God, we can still trust in His presence and goodness.

Practicing the Presence of God

When we feel that God is silent, we can practice the presence of God by talking to Him regularly. Brother Lawrence wrote that we build our faith by "the practice of the presence of God" (2 Corinthians 2:11-14). When we are constantly talking to Christ, we can develop a deeper trust in Him, even when we cannot hear Him. The Bible says, "When I am afraid, I will trust in you" (Psalm 56:3). By meditating on the psalms that speak about fear, we can make quicker transitions from fear to faith. Ultimately, our trust in God is not based on our emotions, but on our understanding of His character and presence. When we choose to trust Him, even when we cannot hear Him, we can experience a deeper level of faith and relationship with God.
