Dignity and Dependence

Dignity is a complex and multifaceted concept that is often tied to our sense of self-worth and value. However, when we become overly dependent on others for our sense of dignity, we can find ourselves in a precarious position. As the Bible teaches, our dignity is not defined by our relationships with others, but rather by our relationship with God (Psalm 139:13-14). When we seek to derive our sense of dignity from others, we are placing our self-worth in the hands of those who are imperfect and fallible.

The problem with seeking dignity from others is that it can lead to a sense of insecurity and fragility. When we are overly dependent on others for our sense of dignity, we can become easily hurt and offended by their actions or words. This can lead to a cycle of resentment and anger, as we seek to protect our sense of dignity at all costs. In contrast, when we derive our sense of dignity from our relationship with God, we are able to stand firm in the face of adversity, knowing that our worth and value are not defined by the opinions of others.

So how can we maintain our dignity when we are dependent on others? The key is to recognize that our dignity is not defined by our relationships with others, but rather by our relationship with God. This means that we must learn to rely on God for our sense of worth and value, rather than seeking it from others. We can do this by cultivating a deep and abiding relationship with God through prayer, scripture, and community. As we do, we will find that our sense of dignity is not tied to the opinions of others, but rather to our relationship with the God who created us in His image. When we are rooted in God, we are able to stand firm in the face of adversity, and to maintain our dignity even in the midst of dependence on others.
