Biblical Answer

The pursuit of unity is a challenging task that requires effort and intentionality. As the Apostle Paul writes, "Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace" (Ephesians 4:3). This unity resides in the Spirit shared by the community (1 Corinthians 12:13). To maintain unity, we must emphasize those things that make for unity, such as love, forgiveness, and understanding. This is not to say that we should ignore or downplay our differences, but rather that we should approach them with humility and a willingness to listen and learn from one another.

The power of our words can either build up or tear down. As the Bible teaches, "The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit" (Proverbs 18:21). We must choose our words carefully, considering how they will impact others. This requires a deep understanding of the weight of our words and the importance of using them to build up and not tear down. As Jesus teaches, "A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of" (Luke 6:45). We must examine our hearts and consider the fruit of our words before speaking.

In the pursuit of unity, we must be willing to listen to and learn from one another. This requires a willingness to set aside our own perspectives and biases, and to approach the conversation with an open mind and heart. As the Bible teaches, "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres" (1 Corinthians 13:4-7). When we approach conversations with love and humility, we create an environment in which unity can flourish.
