Knowing God's Presence in the Darkest of Times

When life becomes overwhelming, and darkness seems to surround us, it can be challenging to know if God is still present. In such moments, we might feel isolated, alone, and unsure if God cares. The Bible teaches that Satan, the enemy, is a prowling lion who seeks to devour us (1 Pet. 5:8). Depression, in particular, can make us turn inward, and we may already feel that God is not present. However, God is not absent; He is working in our lives, even when we don't feel His presence.

Listening for God's Voice in the Dark

In the midst of darkness, it's essential to listen to God's voice rather than talking to others or trying to find answers in books. The Bible encourages us to remain quiet and listen to God in the dark, rather than speaking while in the wrong mood (Psalm 97:2). When we listen to God, He will give us a precious message for someone else once we are back in the light. This requires us to trust God and obey, even when we don't understand what He is doing. We must learn to hear God's voice, even when we don't feel His presence.

Finding God's Presence in Everyday Circumstances

To know God's presence in our lives, we must learn to deal with Him about everything. We should enter into the secret place and find that God was right in the middle of our everyday circumstances all the time. We must apply the gospel to our lives and link our feelings to our faith, arguing ourselves out of the gloom and unmasking the unbelief that has nourished it. As we do this, our focus will change, and we will emerge from our isolated darkness, finding our usual responses to people and activities changing. We will feel a sense of comfort in remembering that the sovereign, loving God is in control. In the darkest of times, we must trust God and learn to hear His voice, even when we don't feel His presence.
