The Biblical View of Money

The Bible teaches that money is a spiritual barometer, an idolatry-meter that reflects our attitude toward God. Jesus said that the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil (Matthew 6:19-21, Luke 12:13-21), and Paul warns that the love of money can lead people to wander from the faith and pierce themselves with many griefs (1 Timothy 6:10). This means that our attitude toward money is not just a practical issue, but a spiritual one that affects our relationship with God.

The Problem of Loving Money

The Bible teaches that loving money is a problem that disappoints us in the end. No matter how much we have, it's never enough. As the psalmist says, "He who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor he who loves abundance with its income" (Ecclesiastes 5:10). This is because our hearts are greedy and always want more. The love of money can lead us to prioritize material possessions over spiritual values, and to trust in money rather than God. As Jesus taught, it's harder for a rich person to enter the kingdom of heaven than for a camel to go through the eye of a needle (Matthew 19:24).

The Importance of Stewardship

The Bible teaches that we are stewards of God's resources, not just our money, but also our time and talents. We are accountable to God for how we use these resources, and we should prioritize spiritual values over material wealth. As Paul says, we should keep our lives free from the love of money and be content with what we have (1 Timothy 6:6-10). This means being generous and giving to others, rather than hoarding wealth for ourselves. By living in accordance with these principles, we can experience the blessings of God and live a life that reflects our faith.
