Biblical Answer

In the biblical worldview, the concept of self is closely tied to our relationship with God. The Bible teaches that our true identity and self-worth come from our relationship with God, not from our own efforts or accomplishments. As the Bible says, "You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your body" (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). This means that our sense of self is not defined by our strengths, weaknesses, or accomplishments, but by our relationship with God and our desire to honor Him.

The idea of finding a new sense of self through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ is a fundamental aspect of the Christian faith. As Jesus said, "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it" (Luke 9:23-24). This means that we must surrender our old selves, with all their flaws and weaknesses, and find our new selves in Christ. As the Bible says, "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!" (2 Corinthians 5:17). This is a process of metanoia, or a change of mind that results in a change of life, as described in the Greek word.

In this new self, we find our true identity and purpose in life. We are no longer defined by our old selves, but by our relationship with God and our desire to honor Him. As the Bible says, "We are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do" (Ephesians 2:10). This means that our new selves are created to live out God's purposes and plans for our lives, and to bring glory to Him. In this way, we find a new sense of self that is rooted in our relationship with God and our desire to honor Him. I am not my own, but I am a new creation in Christ, and that is my true identity.
