The Problem of Suffering and the Silence of God

When we are in pain, it can be tempting to feel as though God is distant or unresponsive. We may cry out to Him, asking why He is not helping us, and feeling as though He is ignoring our pleas. However, this is not necessarily the case. In fact, God is often more present and involved in our lives when we are suffering than we might realize. As C.S. Lewis so eloquently puts it, "God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world." This means that God is not necessarily silent when we are in pain, but rather, He is using our pain as a way to get our attention and to draw us closer to Himself.

The Purpose of Suffering

So, why does God allow suffering? The Bible teaches us that suffering is a result of sin, and that it is a reminder of our need for God. When we are suffering, we are often forced to confront our own sin and our own need for God's help. This can be a painful and humbling experience, but it is also an opportunity for growth and for deepening our relationship with God. As the psalmist says, "It is good for me to draw near to God; I have put my trust in his word" (Psalm 119:56). In other words, suffering can be a catalyst for us to draw closer to God and to trust in His goodness and sovereignty.

God's Presence in Suffering

Even when we feel as though God is distant or unresponsive, He is often still present with us. As the psalmist says, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from helping me, from the words of my groaning?" (Psalm 22:1-2). Jesus himself experienced this kind of suffering and cried out to God, saying, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" (Matthew 27:46). But even in the midst of this suffering, God was still present with Jesus, holding him and weeping with him. This is also true for us, even when we feel as though God is silent or distant. He is still present with us, holding us and weeping with us, and using our suffering to draw us closer to Himself.
