The Nature of Joy

Joy is not just a fleeting emotional high, but a quiet and deep sense of peace and contentment that comes from knowing and trusting in God. It is a sense of well-being that is not dependent on external circumstances, but on our relationship with God. According to Scripture, joy is often linked with a well-ordered community, where there is peace among believers and a sense of forbearance towards others (Rom 14:17; 15:13; Eph 2:14-17). This suggests that joy is not just a personal experience, but also a communal one, that is rooted in our relationships with others and with God.

Finding Joy in the Midst of Chaos

In a world that is often complicated and chaotic, it can be challenging to find joy. However, Scripture reminds us that God has already begun the renewal that will take place, and that there are opportunities for joy today, not just when eternity arrives (Rom 14:17; 15:13). Joy is not just a future hope, but a present reality that can be experienced in the midst of chaos. As Richard Foster said, joy is the keynote of all the Disciplines, and it can be found in the everyday practices of life, such as eating, drinking, working, feasting, gratitude, celebration, worship, solitude, fasting, and serving (Eccles. 5:18-20). These practices can become joyful as we practice them over time, and they can help us to see the beauty of God's creation and the church.

Returning to the Cross

When joy is elusive, it can be helpful to return to the cross and appreciate the beauty of what Jesus did. His sacrifice and willingness to become like us is a source of joy that can be experienced in the midst of chaos. As we reflect on the cross, we are reminded that joy comes from God, and that we are freed to take joy in the things he has blessed (1 Tim. 6:17). This includes everything good that God has provided for our enjoyment, such as food, drink, work, and relationships. By returning to the cross and appreciating the beauty of God's creation and the church, we can find joy in the midst of chaos and experience a deep sense of peace and contentment that comes from knowing and trusting in God.
