Understanding the Purpose of Fasting

Fasting is a spiritual discipline that can help us deepen our relationship with God and focus on our prayer requests. When we fast, we are literally praying with our body, offering all our energy and attention to God. The Bible encourages us to fast, especially when we need a breakthrough or a change in our situation. In Luke 2:37, we read that Anna, a prophetess, fasted and prayed for 84 years, waiting for the redemption of Israel. Similarly, in Acts 13:2-3, the Holy Spirit instructed the church at Antioch to set apart Barnabas and Saul for a special task, and they fasted and prayed before their departure.

Determining the Length of a Fast

The length of a fast can vary, depending on the individual's need and circumstances. A one-day fast is a good starting point, especially for those who have never fasted before. This can be done by missing the evening meal and focusing on prayer and fasting from sundown to sundown. As we become more comfortable with fasting, we can move on to longer periods, such as three or seven days. However, a forty-day fast is an extreme activity that should be reserved for those who are experienced in fasting and have a specific reason for doing so. It's essential to listen to our body and not push ourselves too hard, especially if we have health concerns.

Guidelines for Fasting

When fasting, it's essential to remember that our body is not our ultimate priority. We should not fast for selfish reasons or to manipulate God into answering our prayers. Instead, we should fast to humble ourselves, seek God's guidance, and express our dependence on Him. As we fast, we should also remember to pray, not just focus on the mechanics of fasting. We should link the severity of our crisis to the severity of our fast, and be open to the guidance of the Holy Spirit. By following these guidelines, we can make fasting a powerful tool for spiritual growth and deeper intimacy with God.
