The Problem of Suffering

The question of why God allows us to suffer is a complex and deeply personal issue. The Bible does not provide a simple answer, but rather encourages us to trust in God's sovereignty and goodness, even in the midst of suffering. C.S. Lewis once said, "God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world." This means that suffering can be a catalyst for spiritual growth and a deeper relationship with God.

The Bible teaches that suffering is not always pointless or unnecessary. In fact, it can be a means of achieving God's purposes and bringing about good in our lives. For example, the apostle Paul wrote in Romans 8:28, "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." This means that even in the midst of suffering, God is working to bring about good and to conform us to the image of Christ. The Bible also teaches that suffering can be a means of discipline, helping us to grow in character and faith. As Hebrews 12:10-11 says, "For our earthly fathers disciplined us for a few years, to prepare us for this life. But God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in his holiness."

Ultimately, the question of why God allows us to suffer is not about finding a logical or rational explanation, but about trusting in God's sovereignty and goodness. As the Bible says in Psalm 138:8, "The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O God, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands." This means that even in the midst of suffering, we can trust that God is working to bring about good and to conform us to the image of Christ. By trusting in God's sovereignty and goodness, we can find hope and peace in the midst of suffering, and ultimately, we can find victory over evil through our sufferings. As theologian Millard Erickson said, "God himself became the victim of evil so that he and we might be victors over evil." This means that our sufferings, though difficult and painful, can ultimately lead to victory and a deeper relationship with God.
