The Purpose of Suffering

Suffering is a reality that we all face at some point in our lives. It can take many forms, from physical pain to emotional distress. But why does God allow us to suffer? One possible answer is that suffering allows us to know and trust God more deeply. When we go through difficult times, we are forced to turn to God for comfort and strength. This can lead to a deeper understanding of His character and a greater trust in His sovereignty. As C.S. Lewis said, "God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world."

The Role of Suffering in Our Relationship with Christ

Suffering can also play a role in our relationship with Christ. When we suffer, we are reminded of the sacrifices that Jesus made for us. He suffered on the cross for our sins, and we are called to follow in His footsteps. As theologian Millard Erickson said, "God himself became the victim of evil so that he and we might be victors over evil." When we suffer, we are given the opportunity to demonstrate our faith and trust in God, even in the midst of difficult circumstances. This can lead to a deeper understanding of God's love and a greater sense of purpose in our lives.

The Sovereignty of God

Ultimately, the reasons for God's permission of suffering are not always clear to us. But we can trust that God has a plan and a purpose in allowing us to suffer. He is not a distant or disinterested God, but a loving Father who is working all things together for our good. As Romans 8:28 says, "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." Even in the midst of suffering, we can trust that God is working out His plan for our lives, and that He will bring us through it to a place of greater joy and peace.
