The Paradox of God's Sovereignty and Human Suffering

The question of why God allows medical debt to be so overwhelming is a complex one that has puzzled many Christians. On one hand, God's sovereignty and justice demand that sin be punished, and yet, He is also a God of love and mercy. The Bible teaches that God became a debtor to humanity by promising to pay the debt of sin, which we could not pay ourselves (Cur Deus Homo 2.18). This debt is not just a moral obligation, but a promise that God made to humanity. In this sense, God's suffering and death on the cross were not just a payment for our debt, but also a demonstration of His love and mercy towards us.

The Purpose of Suffering

While it is difficult to understand why God allows medical debt to be overwhelming, we can look to the Bible for some guidance. The Bible teaches that suffering can be a means of growth and character development (Rom 5:3-5). It can also be a way for God to demonstrate His power and glory (Ps 66:10-12). However, it is also true that suffering can be a result of sin and the consequences of our actions (Gen 3:16-19). In this sense, medical debt can be seen as a consequence of our sinful nature and our tendency to prioritize our own interests over God's will.

The Hope of Redemption

Despite the overwhelming nature of medical debt, the Bible offers a message of hope and redemption. Through faith in Jesus Christ, we can be released from the debt of sin and experience the healing and restoration that God promises (2 Cor 5:17-21). This hope is not just for the future, but also for the present. Even in the midst of suffering, God can use us to bring glory to Himself and to demonstrate His love and mercy to others (Rom 8:28-30). As we face the challenges of medical debt, we can look to God's promises and trust in His sovereignty and love, even when we do not understand why things are happening as they are.
