Is it selfish to want to keep fighting when everyone else tells me to give up?

The Struggle is Real

The desire to keep fighting when others tell you to give up is a natural and common feeling. In fact, the Bible says, "For we also have had the gospel in our mouths, as you also have. But I tell you, the time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in mysterious ways, but will tell you plainly about my Father" (John 16:25). This verse highlights the importance of perseverance in the face of adversity. When we feel like giving up, it's essential to remember that God is with us, and He fights for us (Exodus 14:14).

The Dangers of Surrender

While it may seem like giving up is the easiest option, it's often motivated by personal benefits rather than a genuine desire to follow God. For example, someone might say, "I'm going to give myself to God because I want to be delivered from sin." However, true surrender goes beyond natural devotion. As Jesus said, "If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters—yes, himself also—he cannot be my disciple" (Luke 14:26). This means that true surrender requires us to let go of our own desires and follow God's will, even when it's hard.

The Importance of Perseverance

When we feel like giving up, it's crucial to remember that perseverance is what we need in prolonged wars. As Paul said to Timothy, "Endure hardship with us like a good soldier of Christ Jesus" (2 Timothy 2:3). This means that we need to dig deep and find the strength to keep going, even when it feels like the whole world is against us. By persevering, we can develop mental balance, strengthen our moral character, and deepen our relationship with God. As the Bible says, "I can do all this through him who gives me strength" (Philippians 4:13).
