Fear of the Future: A Biblical Perspective

The fear of not knowing what the future holds is a common concern for many people. However, as Christians, we have the assurance that God is in control of our lives and has a plan for our future. When we fear the unknown, we can either attribute it to luck or chance, or we can recognize that it is under the control of our wise and loving heavenly Father. This shift in perspective can bring a sense of peace and trust in God's sovereignty.

The Bible teaches us that we should not be anxious about the future, but rather, we should trust in God's goodness and faithfulness. Proverbs 19:21 says, "Many are the plans in a person's heart, but it is the Lord's purpose that prevails." This verse reminds us that our plans and expectations may be uncertain, but God's purpose and plan for our lives are certain. Furthermore, 1 Peter 5:7 encourages us to "cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you." By casting our fears and anxieties on God, we can find peace and trust in His sovereignty.

In addition, the Bible warns us against seeking to know the future apart from God. Deuteronomy 18:10-12 warns against seeking to know the future through mediums and spiritists, who can lead people astray and into great spiritual darkness. Instead, we should trust in God's promises and lean into the future fulfillment of His plans. By doing so, we can live with a sense of anticipation and hope, knowing that God is in control of our lives and has a plan for our future. As the Psalmist says, "I will not fear what man can do to me; I will trust in you, O Lord; I will not be afraid. You will be my shelter and my shield." (Psalm 118:6) May we trust in God's sovereignty and goodness, and live with a sense of hope and anticipation for the future.
