Can We Still Be a Good Parent if We're Dying?

The Bible teaches that children are a blessing and a reward from the Lord. In Psalm 127:3-5, David writes, "Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one's youth. Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them! He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gate." This verse emphasizes the value and significance of children in our lives. Even in the midst of a terminal illness, a parent can still be a good parent by being present, loving, and supportive to their child.

The Bible also teaches that parenting is a sacred responsibility, and that children ultimately belong to God. In Psalm 127:1, David writes, "Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain." This verse reminds us that our role as parents is to care for our children, but ultimately, God is the one who is in control. As a dying parent, it is essential to trust in God's sovereignty and providence, and to rely on His strength and guidance in parenting.

In Philippians 4:6-7, Paul writes, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." By praying for guidance and wisdom, a dying parent can still be a good parent and provide a sense of peace and security for their child. Ultimately, it is God who is the good parent, and He will guide and direct us as we navigate the challenges of parenting, even in the face of a terminal illness.
