Lying is a violation of the truth that includes a conscious intent to deceive. The Bible consistently emphasizes the importance of truthfulness and the consequences of lying. Proverbs 19:5 warns that lying will be far more pleasant than the consequences of lying, while Hebrews 6:18 states that it is impossible for God to lie. Jesus also emphasizes the importance of truthfulness, saying "Simply let your Yes be Yes, and your No, No" (Matthew 5:37). Lying is a great sin against God, against the Church, and against love, and can lead to shame, guilt, and destruction.

The Bible teaches that lying is a problem because it denies the character of God, who is truth. Jesus said, "I am ... the truth" (John 14:6), and God's word embodies truth (John 17:17). Lying comes from Satan, who delights in falsehood, and is a way of speaking according to his own nature. In contrast, God is not human that he should lie or change his mind (Num. 23:19; 1 Sam. 15:29; cf. Ps. 89:35; Isa. 31:2). The Bible also warns against the consequences of lying, including being struck down by God (Acts 5:1-11) and being excluded from the heavenly city (Rev. 21:8).

The Bible teaches that truth is essential in the way God relates to us, and that lying can lead to great harm. If we lie, we can deceive others and ourselves, and can lead to spiritual death. Jesus said, "Do not lie to one another" (Ephesians 4:25), and Paul wrote that those who lie are not speaking the truth in their hearts (Romans 3:4).
