Biblical Answer

The Bible teaches that God is a jealous God, who continually seeks to protect His own honor (Ex. 34:14; Deut. 4:24; 5:9). This is not the same as human jealousy, which is often characterized by frustration, envy, and spite. God's jealousy is a holy and righteous attribute, motivated by His regard for His holy name, will, and government. It is a personal element that reveals His character and is essential to His sovereignty and righteousness.

God's jealousy is not about protecting His own interests or desires, but about upholding His holiness and justice. When God says "I am a jealous God," He is saying that He will not tolerate any behavior that dishonors Him or undermines His authority. This is why He warns the Israelites, "You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God" (Ex. 20:4-5). God's jealousy is not about being possessive or controlling, but about being faithful and loyal to His own character and purposes.

So how can jealousy be righteous? It can be when it is motivated by a desire to protect and uphold God's honor and character. When we reflect God's jealousy for His own honor, we are not being selfish or possessive, but rather faithful and loyal to Him. We are recognizing that God's character and reputation are essential to His sovereignty and righteousness, and that we should not tolerate any behavior that undermines or dishonors Him. This means that we should be willing to speak out against injustices and wrongdoings, and to stand up for what is right, even if it means going against the crowd or facing opposition. By reflecting God's jealousy for His own honor, we can demonstrate our love and loyalty to Him, and our commitment to upholding His character and purposes.
