Why I Trusted My Financial Advisor with My Life Savings

A Lesson in Trusting in God

As I reflect on why I trusted my financial advisor with my life savings, I am reminded of the importance of trusting in God, rather than trusting in human beings or earthly institutions. My financial advisor, despite his flaws and mistakes, was a person I had entrusted with my financial well-being. However, I had also come to realize that trusting in him was not the same as trusting in God. In fact, it was a form of idolatry, where I was placing my trust in a human being rather than in the God who is sovereign over all creation.

The Dangers of Idolatry

The Bible warns against the dangers of idolatry, where we place our trust in things other than God. In Psalm 118:8, it says, "It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man." This verse reminds us that our trust should be in God, rather than in human beings or earthly institutions. When we trust in God, we are acknowledging His sovereignty and His ability to provide for us. However, when we trust in human beings or earthly institutions, we are placing our trust in something that is fragile and fallible. This can lead to disappointment and heartache, as we saw in the case of my financial advisor.

Learning to Trust in God

As I reflect on my experience, I am reminded of the importance of learning to trust in God. This involves recognizing that God is sovereign over all creation and that He is able to provide for us. It involves acknowledging that our trust should be in God, rather than in human beings or earthly institutions. And it involves taking steps to remove obstacles to faith and to encourage biblically-centered spiritual growth. By learning to trust in God, we can avoid the dangers of idolatry and experience the peace and security that comes from knowing that we are in God's hands. As the Bible says in Psalm 37:3-4, "Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart." May we learn to trust in God, rather than in human beings or earthly institutions, and experience the peace and security that comes from knowing that we are in His hands.
