The Value of Humility in the Face of Victory

Humility is a virtue that is essential in the face of victory. When we achieve success, it is easy to become proud and arrogant, but humility reminds us that our accomplishments are not solely due to our own efforts. Rather, they are a result of God's providence and grace. As the Bible says, "When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom" (Proverbs 11:2). Humility acknowledges that we are not the authors of our own success, but rather that God has given us the opportunity to succeed.

In the face of victory, humility also reminds us of our dependence on God. When we are proud, we tend to forget that we are creatures and that our success is ultimately dependent on God's provision. Humility, on the other hand, recognizes that our strength and accomplishments are not our own, but rather a gift from God. This recognition of our dependence on God leads to a deeper appreciation for His sovereignty and a greater sense of gratitude for His blessings.

Humility in the face of victory is also a key component of true greatness. When we are humble, we are not focused on our own achievements, but rather on serving others and glorifying God. This is exemplified in the life of Jesus Christ, who emptied Himself and became a servant to others, even to the point of death on the cross. As Andrew Murray says, "Humility is the Christlike attitude towards oneself, supremely exemplified in that readiness to forgo his own rights which led the Son of God to the incarnation and cross" (Philippians 2:5-11). By embracing humility in the face of victory, we can truly experience the joy and satisfaction that comes from serving others and glorifying God.
