How do I stop comparing myself to others?
The Dangers of Comparison
The Bible warns us against the dangers of comparison, and yet we often find ourselves comparing ourselves to others. This can lead to jealousy, envy, and ingratitude. When we compare ourselves to others, we are not comparing ourselves to the standard of God's holiness, but rather to the imperfect and often flawed standards of humanity. We must learn to look to God's Word for our self-worth and our identity, rather than looking to others for validation. As the Apostle Paul wrote, "For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise" (2 Corinthians 10:12).
The Root of Comparison
Comparison often stems from a sense of insecurity and inadequacy. We feel like we are not good enough, and so we compare ourselves to others who seem to be more successful or more accomplished. However, this comparison is often a reflection of our own negative traits, rather than the other person's positive ones. As Yehuda Berg wrote, "All of the negative traits that you spot in others are merely a reflection of your own negative traits. Only by fixing yourself can you change others." We must learn to confront our own jealousy and envy, and to seek to become more like Christ, rather than comparing ourselves to others. As the Bible teaches, "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 2:5).
Breaking Free from Comparison
To break free from comparison, we must learn to focus on our own spiritual growth and development, rather than comparing ourselves to others. We must seek to become more like Christ, and to live a life that is pleasing to Him. This means letting go of our need for validation and approval from others, and instead seeking to please God. As the Apostle Paul wrote, "For I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me" (Galatians 2:20). By focusing on our own spiritual growth and development, we can break free from the cycle of comparison and live a life that is truly pleasing to God.
