Why Does God Feel So Distant?

The Problem of God's Distantness

The feeling of God's distantness is a common experience for many people. It is as if God is far away, and we cannot reach Him. This sense of remoteness can be overwhelming, making it difficult to feel close to God. The Bible acknowledges this problem, stating that God can be near and yet far away at the same time (Isaiah 57:15). This paradox is not unique to the Bible; many people have reported experiencing God's presence in some moments, only to feel His absence in others.

The Cause of God's Distantness

The Bible teaches that the distance between God and humanity is not due to God's physical location but rather due to sin. Sin separates us from God, creating a moral distance that cannot be bridged by human effort (Isaiah 59:1-2). This understanding is supported by the fact that Jesus, who is the personification of God, had to understand and experience human sin and sorrow in order to relate to us (Hebrews 4:15). Furthermore, Jesus' presence in the world is not a physical one, but rather a spiritual one, where He lives in us through the Holy Spirit (John 14:23).

Overcoming God's Distantness

The good news is that God's distantness is not a permanent state. Through faith in Jesus Christ, we can experience God's presence in our lives. The Bible encourages us to seek God's presence and to celebrate it when we experience it. The person of Jesus Christ makes God visible and tangible, and through the Holy Spirit, He lives in us, allowing us to experience His presence. By consistently focusing our minds and hearts on God, we can overcome the feeling of His distantness and experience a deeper relationship with Him. As the Bible says, "Our hearts are restless till they rest in you, O God" (Augustine). When we seek God's presence, we can experience His love, peace, and comfort, and our lives can be transformed by His power.
