The Purpose of Suffering

The Bible teaches that suffering serves a purpose, and that purpose is for our good. In Romans 8:28, it is written, "And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose." This verse assures us that even in the midst of suffering, God is working everything out for our benefit. Suffering is not a punishment from God, but rather an opportunity for us to grow and mature in our faith.

Learning through Suffering

Suffering is a teacher, and it can teach us valuable lessons about ourselves and about God. As the author of Hebrews writes, "For it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, but we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin" (Hebrews 4:15). This verse reminds us that Jesus suffered and was tempted in every way that we are, yet he remained sinless. By looking to Jesus in the midst of suffering, we can learn to trust in his goodness and his sovereignty. As the psalmist writes, "For you, O Lord, are my hope, my trust, O Lord, from my youth" (Psalm 71:5). Suffering can be a difficult and painful experience, but it can also be an opportunity for us to deepen our trust in God.

The Educative Value of Suffering

As the author of Hebrews writes, "For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it" (Hebrews 12:11). By enduring suffering and looking to Jesus, we can become more like him and more conformed to his image.
