Showing Love to Those Around Us: A Biblical Perspective

As followers of Jesus Christ, we are called to love one another as He has loved us (John 13:34). This love is not just a feeling, but a choice we make every day to put others before ourselves and to prioritize their needs above our own. When it comes to showing love to those around us, we often think of romantic relationships, but the Bible teaches us that love is not just for our families and friends, but for all people, including strangers and those we may not even know well.

In 1 Corinthians 13:4-7, the Apostle Paul writes about the characteristics of love: "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres." When we show love to others, we must do so in a way that is patient, kind, and selfless. We must be willing to put aside our own needs and desires for the sake of others. This means being present with them, listening to them, and showing them that we care.

One of the best ways to show love to those around us without expecting anything in return is to simply be present with them. This means putting away our distractions, such as our phones and televisions, and engaging with others in a meaningful way. It means looking them in the eye and showing them that we are interested in what they have to say. It means being willing to listen to their struggles and concerns, and offering them support and encouragement. As the Bible says, "Love looks for opportunities to serve others" (Galatians 5:13). When we show love to others in this way, we are not seeking anything in return, but rather we are simply reflecting the love of Christ to them. This is the essence of Christianity: loving others as we have been loved by God. When we do this, we are not only showing love to others, but we are also reflecting the character of God Himself.
