The Importance of Giving to the Church

The Bible teaches that giving to the church is a vital aspect of a Christian's life. In 2 Corinthians 8:9, Paul writes, "For you know the generous act of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich." This verse highlights the importance of giving to the church, not because we expect something in return, but because it reflects our love and gratitude for what God has done for us through Jesus Christ.

The Attitude of Giving

The attitude with which we give is just as important as the amount we give. We should give generously from our hearts, not out of obligation or to gain something in return. As the Bible says, "Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver" (2 Corinthians 9:7). This means that we should give with a sense of joy and freedom, knowing that God is the one who provides for us and our needs.

The Amount of Giving

The Bible does not specify a particular amount that we should give to the church. However, it does encourage us to give generously and sacrificially. In 1 Corinthians 16:2, Paul writes, "On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will need to be made." This verse suggests that we should give a portion of our income regularly, in accordance with our means. Ultimately, the amount we give is not as important as the attitude with which we give and the fact that we give at all.
