Humility is a virtue by which a man has a low opinion of himself because he knows himself well (Psalm 138:6). When we are humble, we are not looking to elevate ourselves, but rather we are looking to serve others and to acknowledge our dependence on God. This is a key characteristic of a Christian, as we are to be dependent on God and thankful to Him (Psalm 100:4-5). Andrew Murray points out that human humility is grounded in our very existence as creatures, and that we are beholden to our Creator for every good thing we have (Psalm 100:3-4).

The biblical view of humility is precisely not feigned or groveling, nor a sanctimonious or pathetic lack of self-esteem, but rather a mark of moral strength and integrity. It involves an unadorned and realistic assessment of who we are, and it involves a willingness to serve others and to acknowledge our dependence on God. This is exemplified in the life of Jesus, who emptied himself and took on the form of a servant (Philippians 2:5-11). Humility is not just a virtue, but it is also a necessary quality for effective living. When we are humble, we are more likely to be teachable and to be open to correction (Proverbs 12:1). As the Bible says, "God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble" (Proverbs 3:34). When we are humble, we are more likely to be blessed by God and to experience His favor in our lives.
