Understanding the Feeling of Losing Purpose

Losing one's sense of purpose can be a disorienting and unsettling experience. It may feel like a crisis of identity or a sense of drifting aimlessly without direction. The feeling can arise from various sources, including a sense of disillusionment with one's current path, a lack of clear goals or aspirations, or even a sense of disconnection from one's values or passions. In many cases, this feeling can be attributed to a lack of alignment between one's current circumstances and their sense of purpose or passion.

The Root of Purpose: Love and Dependence on God

The Bible teaches that our purpose is rooted in our relationship with God and our desire for love and connection with Him. As the Psalmist writes, "You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand" (Psalm 16:11). Our purpose is not primarily about achieving some external goal or outcome, but rather about cultivating a deep and abiding relationship with God. This means learning to depend on Him for strength, guidance, and direction, even in the midst of life's challenges and uncertainties.

Finding Purpose in the Present

Rather than trying to change our circumstances or goals to fit our sense of purpose, we may need to update our life plan to align with God's purpose for us. This means staying focused on Jesus and seeking to understand His will for our lives. As the writer of Hebrews encourages us, "Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith" (Hebrews 12:2). By keeping our eyes on Jesus and our hearts open to His guidance, we can discover a sense of purpose and direction that is rooted in our relationship with Him and is not dependent on external circumstances. In this way, we can learn to navigate life's challenges with confidence and faith, trusting that God is walking with us through the storms.
