Teaching Forgiveness to Children

As a parent, you want your child to understand the biblical concept of forgiveness, especially when they've been hurt by someone they trust. This is a crucial life lesson that can help them develop a heart of compassion, empathy, and kindness. To teach forgiveness, start by modeling it yourself. Show your child that you forgive others as God has forgiven you (Ephesians 4:32). Explain that forgiveness doesn't mean the hurt or wrongdoing is excused, but rather that you choose to release the negative emotions associated with it.

When your child has been hurt, encourage them to pray for the person who hurt them, asking for forgiveness and peace. Teach them to pray for the person's salvation, just as Jesus prayed for those who crucified Him (Luke 23:34). Remind them that forgiveness is a process, and it may take time. Use Scripture to guide them, such as Matthew 6:14-15, which says, "For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins."

To help your child understand the importance of forgiveness, use practical examples. For instance, if they've said something hurtful to someone, encourage them to apologize and ask for forgiveness. Explain that true forgiveness involves restitution, making amends for the wrong done. Teach them to seek reconciliation with others, just as God seeks reconciliation with us through Jesus Christ. By modeling and teaching forgiveness, you'll help your child develop a heart that is quick to forgive, just as God is quick to forgive us (Psalm 103:12). As they learn to forgive, they'll become more like Jesus, who forgave those who crucified Him, even from the cross (Luke 23:34).
