Your Question:
Is it wrong to feel like I'm being punished by God?
Answer:
As a pastor, I've had the privilege of guiding many individuals through difficult times, and one of the most common questions I receive is whether it's wrong to feel like they're being punished by God. My response is that we often misunderstand God's intentions. We may feel like we're being punished, but is it truly a punishment from God, or is it a natural consequence of our actions? Sin has brought ravages of nature and disease into the world, and misfortune can fall on both the just and the unjust. We must also consider our legal standing before God. Any sin, no matter how small it may seem, makes us legally guilty before God and worthy of eternal punishment. However, this doesn't mean that God is out to punish us. Instead, He is a loving Father who desires a relationship with us. When we sin, we disrupt our relationship with God, and this can lead to feelings of guilt and punishment. But God's purpose is not to punish us; it's to allow us to go our own way, which ultimately leads to our own demise. As a Christian, I believe it's essential to examine our consciences and acknowledge our guilt before God. We may feel guilty for things we've done or not done, but this guilt can often masquerade as anxiety, depression, or shame. I encourage my congregation to be sensitive to the Holy Spirit's conviction and to examine their lives, not to evade the truth but to grow spiritually. We must obey God's Word, even if it's difficult, and trust that He is working everything out for our good.
