The Uncertainty of Parenting: A Biblical Perspective

As a parent, it's natural to worry about the future of your children, especially as they grow older and prepare to leave the nest. The uncertainty of what will happen when they grow up and you're not there can be overwhelming. Will they make good choices? Will they remain faithful to their Christian values? Will they find happiness and fulfillment? These are all valid concerns, but as Christians, we must remember that our children's lives are not solely dependent on us. We can't control their decisions or outcomes, but we can trust in God's sovereignty and providence.

The Importance of Teaching and Modeling

Rather than trying to control the outcome of our children's lives, we should focus on teaching and modeling the values and principles that will guide them as they grow into adulthood. This means being intentional about passing on our faith, values, and character to them, even as they grow older and more independent. As Proverbs 22:6 says, "Train up a child in the way he should go, even when he is old he will not depart from it." By teaching our children the ways of God and modeling a life of faith, we can give them the tools they need to make good choices and live a life that honors God. We must also recognize that our children's relationships with their peers and community will play a significant role in shaping their worldview and values. As such, we should encourage them to engage in activities and relationships that will help them develop a strong sense of identity and purpose.

Trust in God's Sovereignty

Ultimately, as parents, we must learn to trust in God's sovereignty and providence over our children's lives. We can't control the outcome, but we can trust that God is working all things together for their good (Romans 8:28). This means releasing our need to control and manipulate, and instead, trusting in God's goodness and wisdom. By doing so, we can find peace and freedom in knowing that our children's lives are in God's hands. As we prepare our nearly adult kids to launch out into the world on their own, we must remember to pray for them, encourage them, and trust in God's plan for their lives. By doing so, we can rest assured that they will become the people God created them to be. As the Bible says, "Do you see a man who excels in his work? He will stand before kings" (Proverbs 22:29). May we trust in God's plan for our children's lives, and may they grow into the men and women of God that He desires them to be.
