Your Question:
How do I balance my own needs with my family's when we're struggling financially?
Answer:
As a pastor and a husband, I've seen many families struggle with balancing their own needs with those of their family's. When finances are tight, it can be overwhelming to make ends meet, let alone find time for personal needs. But I believe that's exactly when we need to prioritize our relationship with God and with each other. As the Bible says, "Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also" (Matthew 6:21). God wants us to find our treasure in Him, not in our finances. In our family, we've learned to be intentional about communicating and working together to make ends meet. We've had to make sacrifices, but we've also learned to appreciate the value of what we have. My wife Susan and I have made it a point to teach our children, Joshua and Rebecca, about the importance of budgeting and stewardship. We've also encouraged them to make conscious choices about their spending and to prioritize their values. By doing so, we've been able to find a balance between meeting our family's needs and taking care of our own. As a family, we've also learned to pray together about our finances and to seek God's guidance. We've committed our finances to Him and asked Him to be in charge of them, using them for His purposes. We've also learned to appreciate the value of simplicity and contentment, rather than always seeking more. By doing so, we've been able to find peace and joy, even in the midst of financial struggles. And that's the greatest treasure of all.
