Can we find common ground in a divided community?

In a divided community, finding common ground may seem impossible, but it is not. Common ground is not necessary; it is enough to have enough overlap between two systems to allow for dialogue. For example, shared interests or activities can bring people together, even if they belong to different communities. In the context of Christianity, serving the poor, attending Bible study, or participating in worship can provide opportunities to enter the worlds of others and come into common loves.

However, finding common ground is not always easy, especially when communities are divided by deep-seated differences, such as the question of homosexuality. In such cases, it is essential to maintain a loving but firm stance on truth. It is better to be divided by truth than to be united by error. This is why it is crucial to be faithful to the gospel and to preach it without compromise, even if it provokes division. In a divided community, prayer can bring unity, even if people are not praying together. Jesus' description of the kingdom of God as a community that is united in faith, rather than a community that is built on common ground with non-Christians, is a powerful reminder of the importance of being faithful to the gospel. When people are united in their faith, they can find common ground in their shared experiences, such as serving the poor or attending worship together.
