The Bible's Teaching on Divorce

The Bible teaches that divorce is not God's original intention for marriage. In Matthew 19:3-9, Jesus quotes Genesis 2:24, stating that marriage is a lifelong union between a man and a woman. The Pharisees, however, asked Jesus about divorce, citing Deuteronomy 24:1-4, which appears to permit divorce. Jesus responds by saying that Moses allowed divorce because of the hardness of human hearts, but God's original intention was for marriage to be a lifelong commitment (Matthew 19:8).

The Exception of Unchastity

In Matthew 5:31-32 and 19:3-9, Jesus teaches that divorce is only permissible in cases of unchastity. This means that if a spouse commits adultery, the other spouse is free to divorce them. However, remarriage after divorce is not allowed, as it constitutes adultery (Matthew 5:32). This teaching is reinforced by Paul in 1 Corinthians 7:15, which states that a Christian may accept a divorce initiated by an unbelieving spouse, but not initiate divorce themselves.
