The Bible's Silence on Gambling

The Bible does not explicitly prohibit gambling. There is no clear condemnation of games of chance or other forms of gambling in Scripture. This lack of explicit prohibition does not mean that the Bible has nothing to say about the subject, however. The Bible does speak to the attitudes and behaviors that are often associated with gambling, such as covetousness, greed, and the pursuit of luck rather than hard work.

The Sovereignty of God and Gambling

Some argue that gambling is inherently sinful because it implies that the outcome of events is not under God's control. However, this argument is not convincing. The Bible teaches that God is sovereign over all creation, but it also acknowledges that humans are finite and cannot know the future with certainty. While the Bible does not explicitly prohibit gambling, it does speak to the social impact of certain behaviors. Gambling can promote covetousness and lead people away from giving and generosity. For these reasons, Christians should be cautious in their example and speech, and should avoid promoting or participating in forms of gambling that may lead others into habits that are not pleasing to God.
